Welcome to the world of fine artisanal scientific illustrations

Our medical story starts with the beginning of the 21st century. At the time, Dr Marco Merlini is the editor of a book about surgical techniques. Three hundred and fifty pictures are planned. Prestigious surgeons have been invited to contribute. The written parts of the book are of outstanding quality. However, most authors have not sent original pictures for their chapters. Illustrating the book becomes the main problem. Dr Marco Merlini decides to realise the drawings of his book himself. Thus begins his journey in medical and scientific illustration. A period of long nights of work starts, trying to understand at best what the authors wish to represent in their respective chapters. The hand is hesitant at first. The attempts are numerous, draft-drawing, erasing, correcting, and drawing again. But little by little, Dr Merlini's hand gets more confident. The night becomes a friend. The drawings become very successful paintings. All chapters are illustrated by his hand, and the book is published.

NEW RELEASE : Atlas of Laparoscopic Digestive Operations, Volume I and II

The Atlas of Laparoscopic Digestive Operations describes the operation’s majority from esophagus to anus, of the abdominal wall, liver, pancreas, spleen and adrenal glands. Each operation is described step be step with original handmade watercolor illustrations.

The Atlas is aimed to surgical residents committed in their first years‘ training, eventually before to embark upon a more specialized field in digestive surgery or to choose to keep a wider approach to digestive laparoscopy.

The Atlas has also maybe the goal to be reviewed by the attending who will supervise a junior colleague in a systematic learning of surgery. It is written by a surgeon who worked in University hospitals in Switzerland and abroad and was thus brought face to many surgical tactiques and techniques all around the world.

Thus, this work is the bunch of one surgeon’s experience who knows that, in surgery, there are different opportunities to do right and also different ways to make wrong.
